Consider these Trends When Ordering Your Wholesale Baking Supplies

Welcome to the final installment of our three-part series on the bakery industry’s current state! This part of the series will cover trends related to color, texture, and sustainability. Keeping these in mind may be helpful as you go about buying the wholesale baking supplies you need. If you would like to read part 1 and part 2, go HERE.

Trends in Color

Different sources seem to point to a pair of contradictory yet complementary color trends. One trend is black food, according to the blog of nutrition supplier Watson Inc. In particular, certain restaurants have begun offering burgers on black buns, and bakeries have begun churning out black baked goods like croissants.

On the other end of the spectrum are multicolored, sparkly offerings, often with edible glitter. Solid but bright colors are becoming prevalent as well. For instance, Food Navigator’s Mary Ellen Shoup points to Generation Z as driving demand for feel-good products with welcoming colors like orange and yellow.

Trends in Texture

Trends in texture are another area to keep an eye on the next time you’re ordering your professional bakery supplies. Watson Inc. points out three types of goods that consumers have a particularly high appetite for: stuffed food, crackers with holes, and thin versions of cookies. Stuffed products are popular because they add a new flavor twist to existing products, while hole-filled crackers can be made as lower-calorie alternatives to their traditional counterparts. Depending on the recipe, the same can go for some thin versions of cookies.

Trends in Sustainability

More than ever, customers have sustainability in mind when they choose which companies to buy from. For instance, in one survey cited by Nielsen, 81 percent of respondents strongly believed “companies should help the environment.”

Bakeries can appeal to this desire for sustainability in several ways. Recycling programs and efforts to reduce food waste are two options. And as highlighted Baking Business’s Nico Roesler, some companies are taking other actions like planting trees and focusing heavily on organic ingredients. These efforts are likely to become more and more important in the future, as younger consumers in particular have sustainability at the top of their minds.
