Tapping into the Organic Market is a Smart Choice
Consumers are hungrier than ever for organic products, creating a huge opportunity for bakeries and other food-making enterprises. As pointed out by Monica Watrous of Food Business News, in 2018, sales of organic products reached $52.5 billion in the United States alone. That was an increase of 6.3 percent from 2017. Bakeries and food manufacturers can hop on this wave by ordering wholesale baking supplies that make it possible to provide organic offerings.
Reasons behind the Boom
Consumers have shown more and more interest in organic offerings for a variety of reasons, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Some customers are concerned about the environment. Others want to support the welfare of animals or enjoy the health benefits of organic food, the manufacturing of which avoids hundreds of prohibited chemicals. And many people go organic for a combination of these reasons.
Produce is the largest organic category. However, Watrous writes that “demand for organic products is spilling into more categories.” For example, the beer manufacturer Anheuser-Busch recently got into the game by rolling out an organic beer. In a Super Bowl commercial for the beer, the company pulled on customers’ heartstrings by appealing to them to support organic farmers.
While beer is the focus of brewers, bakers, meanwhile, may be particularly interested in creating organic chocolate products. Manufacturers are already sensing this pivot: Watrous reports that Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate, for instance, has begun expanding its chocolate chip line to include organic offerings. Organic ingredient suppliers likewise are shifting to hook bakeries up with what they need to go organic.
Eggs and dairy are other areas in which organic supplies can set a bakery apart. In fact, Watrous cited eggs and dairy as a particularly fast-expanding organic market. Customers who are concerned about animal welfare may be more enticed by a bakery that uses cage-free, organic eggs to make its products. Organic dairy, meanwhile, comes from cows who are free of hormones and antibiotics, per the HuffPost, meaning it, too, can help draw animal lovers to bakeries.
