Our Organic Baking Supplies and Other Products Are Certified Organic By QAI

Labels on food products are important to consumers. Organic products are in demand and continue to be in demand as more people eat clean for their own health, the environment, and animal welfare. Bay Co. Inc. is keeping up with the trend for organic food by earning the Quality Assurance International National Organic Certification. Here’s what that means for our partners who buy our organic baking supplies.

What Does Certified Organic Mean?

For a product to use the USDA Organic Seal, the final product must adhere to strict production and handling standards that address the soil quality, fertilizers, pest and weed control. The certification process is not easy. An application is submitted to a third-party certification manager (QIA) who inspects, evaluates and reviews the producer’s methods. If the product is certified organic, it must not use any synthetic fertilizers or genetic engineering. The soil must be clean of pesticides and herbicides. Organic animals must be raised under certain living conditions that accommodate their natural behaviors.

There are four labeling categories describing organic products:

  • 100 Percent Organic means that the product is made up of 100 percent certified organic products. These products will include the name of the certifying agent and the USDA Organic Seal.
  • Organic – these products may include up to 5% of the combined total ingredients as non-organic. This product can include the USDA Organic Seal and the name of the qualifying agent.
  • “Made with” organic ingredients – at least 70% of the final product must be from certified organic ingredients.
  • “Specific organic ingredients” – multi-ingredient products that are made with less than 70% certified organic ingredients cannot use the USDA Organic Seal, but they can list the certified organic products used in production.
